Dr. Theurer’s Advice? Don’t Brush TOO Hard!

OUR GUESS IS… That you haven’t thought a ton about the topic you’re about to read. It ISN’T exactly common dinner conversation! You’ve known forever that brushing those pearly whites of yours is an important part of your lifelong oral health. But, there’s actually something to be said about the technique you use in brushing your teeth properly!

As we treat you and your family, one thing we often notice is that you may simply be brushing your teeth too hard—which can lead to sensitivity. According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), this sensitivity that results from improper brushing effects millions of Americans. Eating acidic foods and drinking acidic beverages is still among the most common contributors to tooth sensitivity, but more and more we’re noticing that your aggressive brushing techniques might be a close second.

Dr. Daniel reminds us, “If the protective enamel layer around your tooth becomes eroded, and/or your gumline starts to recede from hard brushing, the softer tooth tissue (called dentin) can become more exposed. The dentin is connected to nerves which can then cause sensitivity and pain.”

Certain toothpastes and whitening products can also contribute. And, of course, if there’s a problem in your mouth such as a cracked tooth, this can also be causing the pain as well (word to the wise: keep those regularly scheduled checkup appointments to avoid these kinds of problems!).

So, what can you do?

  1. Brush gently. Duh.
  2. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  3. Brush in circular motions.
  4. Consider a desensitizing toothpaste.
  5. Use your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle.
  6. Hold toothbrush in your fingertips—not like a hammer buried in the palm of your hand!
